Greetings Niblack Soaring Eagle Families!

Welcome to another exciting year of Family Reading Nights, Read-a-thons, and special programs! We are an Accelerated Reader “AR” school, which means students read appropriately leveled books and take quizzes. Students set reading goals and those who achieve their quarterly goals attend “AR” parties. In May of each year, students who achieve their annual “AR” goals attend a special activity or field trip. Numerous studies assessing reading achievement have shown that students in “AR” classrooms outperform students not using “AR.” The number one thing a parent can do to help their children excel in school is to get everyone reading! When children fall in love with books, they are able to explore the wonders of the world, and their futures can be filled with endless possibilities. Books are windows to the world!

SUGGESTIONS TO HELP YOUR CHILD DEVELOP A LOVE OF READING! • Designate a time and place for reading • Play audio books in the car and at home • Provide a dry snack while reading to brighten the mood (granola, pretzels, popcorn, etc.) • Get the whole family reading together, and talking about books • Invite family members to sit and read with your children • Visit your public library weekly & get to know the children’s librarian • Encourage your children to earn money to buy books at our Dr. Seuss Book Fair in March • Buy books for your children about sports, hobbies & people that interest them • Never use reading as punishment; reading is a privilege!

I hope to see you at one of our Family Reading Nights and our Dr. Seuss Book Fair! If you have any questions, or if I can help your child in any way, please stop by to see me. One of the greatest honors of my life is working with the children of Niblack Elementary! Thank you for encouraging your children to read at home.

Happy Reading!
